Who am I?

Hi, my name is Arek and I teach English. I believe that effective communication changes the world for the better. For over 15 years I have been helping my clients to solve their problem: how to speak English better at work? So far I have worked with over 300 people and have completed 10,000 lessons. I specialize in teaching adults whose English is at least at a communicative level. They understand a lot, but are not satisfied with how they speak. I don’t teach beginners. In the last few years, I have been focusing on helping people working in recruitment, HR or sales. I also prepare candidates for the Business Vantage exam. I have a Master’s Degree in English philology with pedagogical application.

WHO I AM & WHY I TEACH

Why English?
I became interested in the English language for a very practical reason. When I was 10, my favorite music band was Metallica. I wanted to find out what their singer sings so passionately about (or yells into the microphone, if you prefer.) With the help of a dictionary and an older cousin, I translated the lyrics of all their songs. For the first time in my life, I felt that English could be the key to discovering new worlds. In high school, I chose a class with advanced English. To be accepted, I had to get a high score from the test, which was to take place before the start of the school year. I spent the whole vacation learning English with my cousin, who, among other things, told me to translate about 1000 sentences from Polish to English. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. It is also worth having someone who will inspire you to take action and, if necessary, they will motivate you to work harder. When I was going to a university, I had no problem with choosing a field of study. English philology seemed to be the only sensible solution, mainly because I enjoyed learning English and it came naturally. What happened during these 5 years of study, however, I did not expect. Knowledge of English made me start reading books regularly, becoming interested in history, culture, sociology and politics. It allowed me to open up to the world and shaped me as a human being. I have personally experienced the power of English as something more than just a successful holiday abroad. As a result, I find great pleasure in sharing my knowledge about English with others.
Why I teach
There are three main reasons why I have been teaching English to adults for 15 years. First of all, I love contact with other people. Teaching English, especially one-to-one or in small groups, gives me the opportunity to learn about others, their life experiences and opinions on various topics, all in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Time passes quickly and work becomes a pleasure. But although it is fun, it is not always easy, especially if the goals we have set for ourselves are ambitious and require sacrifice. Second, I feel satisfaction seeing my students making progress. They begin to speak more fluently, use richer vocabulary and build sentences that sound more natural. It often happens somewhere in the background, unnoticed at first, but sooner or later it always happens, provided we put the right amount of work, regularity, and patience into it. When I say “we” I mean the student and me. Third, I strongly believe that effective communication changes the world for the better. The English language enables cooperation in the areas of business, science, culture or human rights. Along with the development of the Internet and social media, the way we communicate has changed as well, unfortunately not always for the better. It is all the more important to me that my clients use the language so as to understand others well, express themselves effectively and pursue their professional and personal goals. All of these reasons above affect the way I teach. I believe that vocabulary is much more important than grammar. My lessons are organized in a way that focuses on giving my clients plenty of opportunities to actually use the language. I also build their self-confidence by changing their mindset, focusing on a particular area of English and frequent revisions. If you want to know more about my learning philosophy, please see here.
My interests
I read a lot, or more precisely – I buy a lot of books and read half of them. For the last few years, I have focused mainly on books in the field of personal development and spirituality. I can especially recommend the following items:
  • Atomic Habits, James Clear
  • The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz
  • Mindfulness. A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World, Mark Williams and Danny Penman
  • The Daily Stoic, Ryan Holiday oraz Stephen Hanselman
I am also interested in psychology, more specifically the way emotions and thoughts interact with each other. Steps 1 and 2 of Better English philosophy are based on my personal experience and knowledge taken from the books mentioned above. When I’m not engrossed in reading, I like to go to the movies, play board games or take a walk in the park feeding the squirrels.
